This dynamic and cutting edge program will look at conflict and the process of conflict resolution through the lens of neuroscience. Stephanie West Allen, lawyer, mediator and writer will answer questions such as: What does the brain do when it is in a conflict? What does neuroscience have to tell us about how to facilitate conflict resolution? What lessons does the brain have for preventing future conflict?

Stephanie will provide practical tools for mediators, coaches, lawyers, organizational leaders, educators, therapists and others who are looking for more effective ways to manage conflict and help their clients do so.

Topics will include:

  • The brain’s need for structure in the conflict resolution process
  • Accidental brains versus brains on purpose: How the brain uses attention and intention
  • The amygdala (reactive brain) and the frontal cortex (reflective brain): The role of each in conflict and decision-making
  • Mirror neurons in the dispute: How people affect each other’s mirror neurons
  • The critical role of purpose — in the brain, and between participants in dispute
  • Stepping back: The essential key to harnessing the brain’s power
  • How do feelings impact the brain? The wise use of emotions, including anger
  • Techniques for leading the brain to new dispute resolution skill levels, both for people in dispute and practitioners (coaches, mediators, facilitators)

Stephanie West Allen, JD is a Denver-based lawyer, mediator, writer and speaker. Stephanie has been studying, speaking and teaching on the mind and the brain for an extensive period. Most recently, she presented at the Smithsonian and conducted the keynote address at the SCMA annual conference. Stephanie has co-authored four articles with well-known neuroscientist Dr. Jeffrey M. Schwartz, on the fascinating area of neuroplasticity. She herself uses the neuroscience frame in her work with people in conflict and will generously share her knowledge and experience.
